How do I do a amended 1040 return in the ProSeries program?

My client forgot to give me some info for his tax return for the 2007 tax return. He just found it now and wants me to fix his return so he can get the rest of his money back.

The solution

First, you need to know the basics of how to amend the return in ProSeries.

1. Mark the Federal return ammended.

2. Mark the State returns ammended.

3. Make your changes.

DO NOT make changes then mark it as amended. You'll have to go back and re-do everything.

Second, go to this link for all the details on the process:

The first step is to activate the amended Federal and State forms. The Federal form is 1040X. Your State amended form may likely have an "X " also after the number for the original return. To activate the Federal form , select 1040X from the forms screen and enter 07 or 2007 on the space that says "This return is for calendar year___". It's advisable to save this amended form under a different name instead of over-writing the original file.

The next step is to make all the changes you need, and the program will do all or almost all the necessary changes and flow the amounts to the 1040X. Amount owed or to be refunded will automatically appear on line 21 or 22 respectively.

You will need to answer one or two "Yes" or "No" boxes, and also provide Explanations for the changes you make on Part II of the form. If changes involve dependents, you may have to complete some columns on part I, line33. In some instances also, you may need to attach supporting documents or additional schedules that resulted from the preparation of the amended return. You, the preparer and the client have to sign the form before mailing. I can't give any advice on your State returns, since I don't know what State you are in. However, normally, there is nothing else to add to the state returns except perhaps to type in the same explanations you provided on the Federal returns. Print and review what you find on the forms carefully before letting the client mail them.

Please, remember that you need to activate the forms first before starting to make any changes!!! good Luck
