how do I keep the live community, help, tax import & tax research area of the screen (at the bottom) minimized? I do not want to see it, it is taking up valuable real estate. The 'hide' arrow only works until I close the program & then opens again
At the very bottom of your client list.. right click your mouse on the line and drag it down.
Well, unless you just downloaded today's update....looks like there has been a change. You can hide or show this section, but I can't seem to change the size anymore.

Around 10th line down, "Help-Me-etc," make it NO.
You'll only have to do this once a year.
I also suggest you make a desktop "Hints" file (or "Lacerte Hints" or "Computer Hints") and put this procedure into your hints. Then you can refer to it next year and not even have to ask again or look for early-2012 references on the Intuit website.
On the line underneath the "Help-Me" etc line, there's a line about "input-error-checking." You may want to set this to "no" if you're a fast typist. Having it be "yes" slows down the program to a snail's pace. You may also have to set it to "no" in all your modules, not just Individual. (By contrast, setting "Help-Me" to "no" in any module, makes all of them automatically be "no.")
