Help with opening a backup file with QB2011

US QuickBooks Pro for Windows

I cannot open my backup file from my 2007 QB with the new QB 2011. I have selected "restore back up company" and when I select the file where this is located, there appears to be no files in the folder. Any ideas?

First, using your QB2007 file run your utilities program to verify data and rebuild if necessary - this is to be sure you have a clean file before you upgrade it to QB2011.

Backup the QB2007 file and place the backup file on your desktop. Now open QB2011, use the restore from backup and point it to the copy on the desktop. See if that works.

Mary

(Yes, I know QB2011 should be able to find the most current backup file - but, I don't trust it to do so. That is why I like to place a current backup file on the desktop and then point the new version of QB's to the desktop copy.)

Thanks Mary~

I have uploaded QB2011 to a new computer and the original file is on an old computer with the 2007 program.

What is the best way for me to save a backup on an external hard drive?  Can you walk me through the steps? Should I then just save the file from my external hard drive to the desktop on my new computer?

Thanks so much. I am not the most tech-savvy kid on the block :)

With Gratitude~
Ashley

Ashley,

On the old computer with QB2007 you want to make sure you have a file that has been checked for corruption before you load it on QB2011.

On your old computer, open the QB's company file and then go to File>utilities>verify data. If it verifies OK, proceed to make a backup copy to  your external hard drive.

If it warns you that you have a problem and you need to rebuild, it will ask you to backup your file before you do the rebuild.  You want to have a backup copy before you rebuild. Proceed with your rebuild ( detailed instructions are in your help file). Once  the rebuild is completed, go back and verify your data again.  Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 rebuilds to correct all of the corrupt files. Once your verify data comes up without any problems proceed to make a backup file to your external drive. Make sure if you now have several backup files on your external drive that you select the final clean backup file to transfer to your desktop on your new computer.

I prefer to transfer the backup file to the desktop of your new computer - so that it is easy to find.

Open QB2011 and follow the procedure to restore your file from the backup copy now sitting on your desktop. When you open QB2011 it may ask you immediately if you want to restore a QB's file and upgrade it to QB2011. That is OK too, because, since this is the only QB's file you have on the new computer you are sure it will select the correct file that is sitting on your desktop.

In either case QB's will know that the file sitting on your desktop is in an old format and it will warn you that it needs to upgrade the file to the new format - click OK.

I think QB's 2011 has probably already been placed in a folder on your C drive on your new computer, so you will want to make sure you know how to find it - as during the process of restoring the backup file  I think it asks you to where you want it saved.

Once the file has been restored and upgraded to QB2011, you can delete the backup file sitting on your desktop.

Mary
