Copy your client data files to a flash Drive and back them up before you attempt to reinstall. Also I would defragment the disk drive first and see if that works. Either way back up the client files first

I've been working in the program for week now. This is the first time I've received this message. I can't even open my ProSeries program. How can I save my client files? Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Go to your hard drive if installed on the C Drive and look for ProSeries under ProWin10 , then backup the folder that says 10data to a flash drive or CD. Then if you have to reinstall you will have the client files saved. But like I stated I would defragnment the Hard Drive first to see if that will solve the problem. But back up the files for 10Data under ProWin10

The solution

Do as Mt Juliet recommended. I would use Windows Explorer to copy C:\PROWIN10\10DATA to a flash drive or external hard-drive. I would not use the ProSeries Copy/Backup command. I don't think you have that available anyway since you indicated you cannot start ProSeries.

I would also copy the entire C:\PROWIN10 folder to my external hard-drive or flash drive (if space permits). If you don't have an external hard-drive or a large capacity flash drive, consider copying C:\PROWIN10 to another hard-drive within your computer, such as your D: drive. You can never have too many backups.

You didn't complete your post to indicate which specific file Basic is having trouble loading. Once you're up and running, having a complete copy of your C:\PROWIN10 folder on another drive will give you access to such individual files so that you can use them for "spare parts" to see if they fix your problem. This works more often than not.

Also, did you actually mean that the online solution told you to "uninstall and reinstall"? If so, uninstalling the program won't wipe out your data files, but don't take a chance. Back them up first.

ProSeries' generic answer to every glitch is to reinstall the program. In most cases, that's overkill, but they say that to keep from having to troubleshoot every little problem. The premise is that reinstalling will fix whatever's broken so just tell the user to reinstall and be done with it.

Finally, I actually don't know whether ProSeries Basic installs into the C:\PROWIN10 folder, but that's the default folder for ProSeries Professional. I assume they're the same, but if Basic uses a different folder name, then adapt accordingly.

Once you're reinstalled, be sure to run Homebase Database Maintenance. I know reinstalling is a daunting proposition at this point in the tax season, but it's typically uneventful.

Thanks, Frankly. I was afraid of something like that. There are so many differences between Professional and Basic. Some of them make sense, but some of them are downright perplexing. I'm always reluctant to try to coach a Basic user because I just never know when there will be a difference, and whether the difference will make a difference.
