Help regarding items and classes. Please read! :)

US QuickBooks for Macintosh : 2009

Hello, here is my client's scenario:

They are a publishing company that publishes quarterly periodicals for several different regions. They have currently set each edition up as an Item (i.e. North Region edition Q1 2009, South Region Edition Q1 2009, etc.). As you can see, in short amount of time the Item list will grow and each year several items will no longer be relevant but still have a great deal of relevant history attached. Their form of income is advertising so I am going to set up the various Ad Spaces as the Items (i.e. Full page, 1/2 page, etc.). But what is the best way to be able to report on each edition? If they want to run reports for a prior year's edition in a specific region what is the ideal setup? Classes could work but can't I only use one category of classes? So I could have each particular region be a class but not also each Q1, Q2, etc edition? Right? I feel like I am missing something obvious. Please help>>>> :)

Okay, I think this is what I was trying to call to memory but couldn't: Custom Fields. Wouldn't this be a great use for Custom Fields? I can have one field by Region, then Issue and then Year. And can I report on these as well?

Using custom fields might work. . .however, you might not have the flexibility on reporting that you are looking for.

Also - you might try creating sub-items - each edition is an item. . .each year a sub-item of edition. . .each quarter a sub-item of year. . and each ad type as a sub item.

You might also be able to use customer:job fields for this. . .not sure, but creating a customer for the edition with each advertiser as the job. . .??

I would suggest that you try various methods and see which ones report out better.
