New client with horrible QuickBooks. Hired to clean up. Where would one start? Bank reconcilliations?

Yes, reconciling the bank accounts and credit card accounts is a good starting point. If the items are set up wrong, inventory problems or just a really bad mess, you may assess whether it is more efficient to clean it up or start over (depending on how much is involved).
