Getting write checks in icon bar and # input on write checks screen

US QuickBooks Pro for Windows : 2009

I'm setting up a new company and I can't get write checks in icon bar and checks screen doesn't allow me to imput # just say"to print". I've set up other co's w/this program and didn't have problem. what am i doing wrong

 are you, use write checks to get a blank check on screen, then use the view menu and select add to icon bar

 In addition to Rustler's response, if you to not want TO PRINT, uncheck the box TO BE PRINTED in the Write Checks screen. This box is about half way down the screen in the middle.
