FYI: Out-of-state NY CPA tax preparers

This just in from AICPA:

Exemption for CPAs with New York Tax Clients to Register with the State

New York’s Governor David Paterson has signed into law the bill (A.40023) that eliminates the requirement for non-New York CPA tax preparers who file New York returns to register with the state. The provision (included in Section F) clarifies that all CPAs and attorneys and the people they supervise will not have to register with the New York State Department of Tax and Finance for the new Tax Preparer Registration Program. The legislation as originally passed exempted New York licensees, but not out-of-state CPAs. The tax preparer registration provision is scheduled to take effect on December 31, 2009.

I registered already, but maybe it'll save somebody else that hour or so of hoop-jumping.  I don't know if it also applies to EAs or other licensed preparers.

Morons. I've got MORONS on my team. Nobody is going to rob us going DOWN the mountain. We have got no MONEY going DOWN the mountain. When we HAVE GOT the money, goin' back UP the mountain, THEN you can sweat.

I am neither a CPA, EA or Atty, I do less than 10 NY State tax returns a year, must I secure a license?  If so where do I find the application.  Thank you Archie

www.nystax.gov  The requirements are listed there.  You have to register if you prepare even one return as a paid preparer and are not a CPA, Attorney, or public accountant.  If it's less than 10 returns, the fee is $0.  Ten or more returns, the fee is $100.00 to register.
