Fund transfers and journal entries

I recently switched to Mac pro 2007 from windows pro 2006. I was using "transfer funds" in windows to make transfers between my savings and checking acts but I can't find that option on the Mac. Does a transfer funds option exist?I decided to use the "journal entry" to conduct my transfers but it appears the credit and debit are reversed. EX: I credit my savings with 1K and debit my checking with 1K (a simple transfer of 1k from checking to savings) but it shows up as opposite in my registers (savings will show payment of 1K and checking will show deposit of 1K).While in the general journal entry window I can't find a way to go back and look at past entries. I only have the option to go forward. Is there a way to look at my journal entries from there or anywhere?

Welcome to the QB-Mac community, IES!

As you're finding, the Mac version doesn't have some of the features of its Windows counterpart. A specific transfer-between-bank-accounts function doesn't currently exist. You can either make such an entry right in the register of either account or by using general-journal entries, as you have been doing.

You're also right that you can't go back to previous entries in the General Journal window. You can see a listing, however, by filtering a Journal report.

1. In the Report Finder, under Accountant & Taxes, select the report line "Journal," pick the date range you want, and click the Display button (see attached file "1 - Report Finder").

2. When the report displays, click the Filters button at the top of the window (see attached file "2 - Buttons").

3. In the Report Filters window, add a filter for Transaction Type and chose the type "Journal."

4. Click the Apply button.

The result should be a report of all GJ entries made within the specified date range. (I hope this isn't TOO much info!)

Good luck!

Debi

Thanks Debi,

No, not to much info but a lot more work for me than the windows version. I have found the Mac version substantially lacking compared to the windows version, Mac doesn't even have a GUI.

I will be sending Intuit my opinion of their product directly.

Thanks for your help, you guys are great.

Guy

Hi, Guy!

I remember waaaaayy back in my banking days learning that accounting debits and credits were different from debits (withdrawals) and credits (deposits) in banking. Please don't ask me to explain that, 'cause I'm not an accountant! ;-)

It is true that if you use a QuickBooks general journal entry to record a funds transfer between bank accounts, then the account receiving the funds (deposit/transfer in) needs to show a debit and the account sending the funds (payment/transfer out) needs to show the offsetting credit. Afterward, when you look at each account's register, you'll see that what you entered as a debit shows as a deposit and what you entered as a credit shows as a payment.

Cheers!

Debi

Guy, I was going to suggest that you simply 'swap' the debits and credits in your journal entry.

Might just be easier for you to record the transaction in one of the account registers. Just 'write a check' from one account to the other - then you don't have to worry about debit which? And credit which?

If you bring a question to this forum, please also try to leave an answer for someone else.

Yeah, thanks. There are several work arounds but none are as simple as the fund transfer option in the Windows version of QB. It seems like a lot of things I could do in Windows QB are not here in my Mac version. I'm disappointed but not at a stand still.

Be sure to use the Feedback option in QuickBooks Pro 2007 for Macintosh to let Intuit know what features you want to see in the next version.
