filing a return before 4/18 that is already on extension

ProSeries

Never had this come up before.  I have a client that told me to put him on extension as a company he would be receiving a K-1 from would not have it to him on time

I e-filed the extension

Client calls me today and says he received the K-1 and wanted to file.

I told him it couldn't be filed until after 4/18.  I figured the e-filing of the return would be rejected since it would have in the system that an extension was already filed.  And that it would be better to send this in May than wait 6-8 weeks through the paper method.

Can a return be e-fled before 4/18 if an extension was already e-filed?  The only state return is for NY if that matters.

I would think that if you already efiled the extension and it was accepted I don't see why you would need to wait until after the 18th.  The extension has already been processed.

If this does not answer your question hopefully someone else will be along to help.

TAXOH is correct - you can file the return anytime you want.

The reason I question it is that the e-file center may say a return has already been processed with this SSN.  I have seen that before when I tried to e-file a return forgetting to first delete estimates from last year that had been copied to the current year when I copied the prior year files into the current year in one shot before I started doing current year returns.

I know paper method I can do it, but again that would take 6-8 weeks and doing the client's return in May and e-filing would be quicker than the paper method

Nope.  I've had returns filed within a few hours of sending the extension off (because we extend everyone not filed as of April 1).  I don't think I got anyone's 1040 acceptance back before getting that same client's extension acceptance back, but the IRS had no issue processing both more or less at once.

That duplicate error means you tried to send the return more than once, and has absolutely nothing to do with extensions.

You need to be sure on the worksheet that ProSeries does not think you are trying to file a second extension.
