Error message: Error: alias already exists

US QuickBooks Pro for Windows : 2009

When I enter the info in the record an expense part of banking, I get an error message that says: error: alias already exists. It won't let me record it and there is not a duplicate in the accounts that I can see

I can't seem to recreate the scenario you mention--QB doesn't call it an alias anymore, it is part of the renaming rules. Some suggestions, verify that the name isn't on the list but inactive. Also, do you have the latest release of QB--R7 (hit F2 to see if you have R7P). If not, I'd suggest you download and install the latest update. There were several updates to the online banking in the last few releases.

I have the same exact problem it says alias already exists and does not let me enter the transaction - it has happened beforfe but would let me enter the transaction - this new release created this issue

I am getting the same error in online banking, but only since updating to R7. I'm finding the only way to add the transactions is to delete the entries from the renaming rules - but that isn't ideal. Any other help would be most welcome.

I am getting the same error, and I have already entered the vendor. It seems as though the data I downloaded from bank shows two transactions for the vendor, and both transactions are just slightly named something different - but are definitely the same vendor. I hope you guys can help us soon!

Tested a few different scenarios using the add multiple tab. Appears the error happens when you enter the same payee name for deposits. When I matched 2 or 3, NO ERROR. However, when I matched a larger number, then I got the error again.

I'm having this error too and this just started. QB has never done this before and nothing has changed since the last time I used QB a couple months ago. I downloaded the transactions via online banking (BofA).

I have seen multiple posts about this "Error: alias already exists" error (since 2004 no less), and I have yet to see an answer or solution from any Intuit employees... plent of requests for company files tho.

There is even another post pointing to this post saying there is a solution... what did I miss?

I recently upgraded to 2009 (not by choice and with EXTREME reluctance) and now understand everyone's complaints about the online banking. Notwithstanding all the other issues, I am now experiencing this "alias already exists" error.

I have indeed upgraded to the much acclaimed R7P, and I get the error. I have removed all the renaming rules, and I still get the error. I have knelt and prayed... still getting it.

Please, someone from the Intuit Community step up and resolve this problem.

I have reported this problem (Error: Alias Already Exists) multiple times but still no response from QuickBooks. Perhaps the best part is that it creates an entry in the register, so if you keep clicking "Add to Quickbooks" you get multiple copies of the transaction. This is more evidence that the new online banking center is a complete disaster.

dittos on this issue. I DID NOT want to go to 2009 but we all know the drill with intuit.

This is issue is appartently

(a) old

(b) widespread) and

(c) without solution.

It is nice to puke up my vendor account list to enter recurring transactions from online banking with vendor XXXa Vendor XXXb and so forth not to mention that OLB is a disaster to enter transactions as it take 3X the time of 2008

I hope someone over there buys a clue before i run out of alpahabet

OK, Same problem here. I have two separate company files running under quickbooks. One works fine with renaming rules. The other has the Error. I also have totally emptied the renaming rules through the renaming rules window, but that does not fix the issue. So it sounds to me like a corrupt file. Is there a file we can delete in the quickbooks folder to reset this? The information has to be kept somewhere!

I was assured by various employees at Intuit that the Online Banking was "fixed" and would not be a problem for me when I finally updated - having been scared to do so prior. Well, I'm trying to work with the online banking for the 1st time and I can't load in my transactions because of this error. As far as I can tell there isn't any way for me to get the charges in question downloaded. I guess I'll have to delete them and enter them manually. ??? Thanks Intuit.

Angela - why not provide your e-mail address right in your answer? I haven't found it so far. Not having time to help debug a software I find this issue very frustrating. Please solve this for us.

Guess this would be a bump, but after using Quickbooks Pro 2009 for half a year, I got this error for the first time. Not sure if the fact that I just ran the R7 update has anything to do with it.

I'm getting the same error. I haven't received it in any previous versions of Quickbooks, however, now I always get it. It appears that the old 'Alias' for the Payee existed in the old version of QB. Now in 2009, the matching does not work when the transactions are downloaded and you are in the process of 'Recording the Expense' for an individual transaction. If you start entering the Payee name, QB finds or matches to the old Alias. When you select the name suggested by Quickbooks and click 'Add to Quickbooks' it comes up with an error as if it is trying to recreate the Alias (or whatever it is called in 2009) and it cannot because it already exists.

I have never been so frustrated with a software package. The new online banking and matching is almost worthless. What on earth is Intuit thinking? It is light years worse than any previous versions.



Even worse, I opened up a registry window as I was entering the online banking transactions. When you 'Add to Quickbooks', the transaction is recorded in the registry, the message 'Error: Alias Already Exists' pops up, and THE TRANSACTION STAYS IN THE DOWNLOADED TRANSACTION LIST. If you don't have the registry open it looks like the transaction never posted, you try to post again, it creates a DUPLICATE entry in the registry and provides the error message again making you think the transaction never posted. If you click 'Finish Later', come back in to downloaded transactions, the entries posted are no longer there. Basically, QB posts the transaction, makes you think it did not because the message 'Error: Alias Already Exists' pops up. Is anyone at Intuit looking into this?

I get the same error. I was just entering a split entry and I got the error. I do not have way to show screen capture. But NOTE when you get this error and you click the button and go to  "Use Register" and you will see the entry already entered in Register :(   the way I want to enter. This is really ODD.

Then I did an Update of ther version for patch. It does NOT  give me the message, make sure to restart QuickBooks after the patch update.

One more this is the WORST version I have ever used, I am using this version cause Bank of america stopped giving QBO files for 2006 version. BOA should have waited for the bug fixes for QB. What a Shame of intuit, expecting end user to report the problem for basic necessity, have't their QA team done the work, or work is out sourced.

Sorry folks if this workaround does NOT work.
