What is happening:
The following error appears after updating QuickBooks to R3 or above, and then attempting to open a company file:
QuickBooks is attempting to open this Company file. Before you can open the company file from your computer you must first open the company file on the computer where the company file is located. (-6177,0)
How to fix the problem:
If the customer is getting the message while restoring the file make sure they are not restoring to removable media such as a thumbdrive.
Be sure you have the most current QuickBooks release.
Detailed instructions:
Please update your program to the most current release.
If you have updated all copies of QuickBooks to R3 or above, with all workstations and server on the same QuickBooks release, and the message still appears, do the following:
Note: If you have QuickBooks 2007 or Enterprise Solutions 7.0, ensure that hosting is switched off for all computers (except the server), where the software is installed before opening the company file. If you still have problems proceed with the following steps. Refer to "Toggling hosting Off and On" below.
On the server, verify that the company file is opened from a local hard disk, not a mapped drive:
On the server computer, start QuickBooks and open the company file that gives the error when you attempt to connect to it from another computer.
When the file is open, press the F2 key.
On the left side of the Product Information window, check the Location entry in the File Information area. This entry should reference a local hard drive.
If the entry does not reference a local drive, click OK to close the Product Information window and proceed to step 2, otherwise proceed to step 3.
On the QuickBooks File menu, select Open Company, and then locate the company file on a local hard drive path (such as C:Program FilesIntuitQuickBooksCompanyFile.qbw).
Note: If the company file is not stored on a local hard drive, locate the file, and then move it to a local hard drive.
On the Open a Company window, choose the company file you want to open, check the Open file in multi-user mode checkbox, and then click Open.
Press the F2 key to open the Product Information window, and verify that the Location entry in the File Information area references a local hard drive location for the company file.
On a workstation computer, start QuickBooks and then open the file that you just opened on the server. If the file does not open, skip to "Toggling hosting On and Off" below.
Repeat this procedure for each company file that you need to access in multi-user mode.
Toggling hosting Off and On
On the server, open the company file in QuickBooks, and then on the File menu, select Utilities > Stop Hosting Multi-User access.
Close QuickBooks, and then restart it.
On the File menu, select Utilities > Start Hosting Multi-user access.
On the File menu, select Open Company, and then locate the company file on a local hard drive path .
Sometimes this issue can be caused by a damaged *.qbw.nd file. To check for a damaged *.qbw.nd file:
Open the .qbw.nd file for the company having the problem, the location should be the same as the data file and the name will show the same company file name.qbw.nd
Verify that the FilePath is the same as what was showing in step 2 in the first group of steps above.
If the path is correct, the file is not corrupt. If it is incorrect, continue with step 4.
If the path is incorrect, the file is damaged. Do not make any changes to the file and close it.
Right click on the [company file name].qbw.nd and select delete.
Go to Start>All Programs>QuickBooks>QuickBooks Database Server Manager>Scan Folders
Click on Add Folder... and browse to the folder that houses your QuickBooks data file to create a new [company file name].qbw.nd file.
Attempt to open the QuickBooks data file
