Electronic signatures on forms, and/or e-filing

Lacerte : 2010

I am asking this question on behalf of edjhoyjr, a member of the Lacerte community. He happens to be my father. Imagine my surprise when I saw his name appear in the Site Activity!

He currently uses Lacerte with pdf and hard copy output. As a result of a broken ankle, he is recovering away from his home/office, so he doesn't have the ability to print, sign, fax to the client to sign, copy, stuff and mail.

We are trying to figure via the phone (and I have never seen the Lacerte screens or menus): what are the options and functions to allow him to e-file for his clients? Is there a marketing link found in a menu or the Help somewhere? There must be somewhere he fills in his EA info?

He just told me he is using 2008, 2009 and 2010.

Any info, guidance, hints, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Before he would be able to efile he needs to be an authorized e-file provider by applying with the IRS for an EFIN.  If he already has the EFIN he could email a password protected copy to his clients and they could print and mail back the 8879 to him with their signature and then he could efile it.

I sent this to him, and I sent the link to the Lacerte tutorials where there also is an E-file primer. So, over the phone we covered the Settings and options.

His concept is, you would send the pdf, but if I understand Lacerte, smilar to other Intuit products, the e-file is an electronic format, not electronic documents. Is it as simple as saving the pdf and emailing to the IRS, or is the e-file a function in the program itself; and one that is a fee service, at that?

The solution

The pdf format is what the client would receive via email in order to review and sign the 8879.  After your father would get the signed 8879 back from the client your father would then electronically file the tax return to Intuit who in turn sends it to the IRS.

Edit:   The electronic filing portion is a function in the program itself where you convert and transmit the return electronically.
