Education credits

Does anyone know if education credits can be filed yet or are we still stuck with the Feb 11th filing date for that, energy credits and the few others affected by AMT?

Look as though we are "still stuck". I am not able to file a return with Education Credit/8863 in it.

Thanks. I'll just set them aside and wait until the 11th along with everyone else. I'm also having trouble with a dependent that has a 1098-T from a college with taxable scholorships. The program gives me an error because dependents can't claim education credits even though I'm not taking a deduction but trying to give the poor kid income. Any ideas?

I'm getting an error code 0383 regarding the education credit and ss #s when I try to efile clients return, and it was one transferred from last year. Has anyone else gotten this error/reject?

The reject 0383 was investigated by the IRS and is estimated to be fixed in their system today, 2/20/08. Please keep in mind, this is their date, and it is subject to change. I would suggest retransmitting the return on the 21st to avoid issue.

Not every year. It happened this year (2007) because of the late in the year AMT vote in Congress after IRS had already had all their forms and processes set in place.

I have a client, single, who attended a midwestern university and received a 1098-T, box 2, for amounts billed for qualified tuition and related expenses. Is the box 2 data entered as expenses in screen 38?

Yes, I believe Screen 38 is correct for the 1098-T input. The line "Qualified Tuition and Fees Paid in 2007" (Code 16) should be the field you use.

Note that Lacerte will optimize between the credit and the deduction based on your input. You can force either using the line just above it, "Blank=Optimize, 1=Force Credit, 2=Force Tuition Deduction" (Code 24).

If you have any other questions about Lacerte, I would recommend using the Lacerte forums.
