I entered a duplicate payment in 2010 for a monthly cc bill ; the one that cleared is not the extra one not checked off as being reconciled. The reconciled one is not the cleared one. How to remedy? sorry for sounding confusing....rosel
Here is how you fix it.
You need to write an entry that reverses each uncleared entry.
This example will clear a duplicate payment (uncleared check in your bank account) and uncleared payment in your credit card.
Go to your home page and click on "enter credit card charges" or open it off the banking menu.
Choose the right credit card.
Fill out the form:
Purchased from: leave blank
Date: today
Amount: amount of uncleared check
Memo: to reverse uncleared payment
Account: choose the actual bank account that was used to make the payment.
Save and close. You may get a warning but ignore it.
Go to reconcile your bank account. Clear the outstanding check with the corresponding entry in the deposit column. Before clearing, open the check and make a note that this is was cleared by a reversing entry, basically that this is not a real check. The net reconciliation will be null. Reconcile the rest of your bank account as usual.
Go to reconcile your credit card. Clear both entries as well.
That's it. If your issue is the opposite of what I described (you find that the new entry lands in the wrong column), then turn the above credit card entry into a "refund/credit". Reconcile as usual.

One of the duplicates (marked "cleared") is not the one that is checked off in the reconciliation. If I open up the one that is NOT checked off in reconciliation, that one is marked "cleared."

I can't help you other than you have to find a way to clear the uncleared entry since if you delete the cleared entry, one of your bank rec will be off and the ending balance in 2010 will be off as well.
