Duplex Printing / Finishing for 2007??

Anyone hear whether Lacerte plans to support duplex printing and some of the advanced finishing capabilities like stapling for 2007??I'm looking to upgrade some printers.I can't believe the 2006 product would not support them.

As a test, I just set my PRINTER to print duplex, regardless of what options the Lacerte program has or doesn't have. My test file came out weird, but for what it's worth, it did print duplex. I got the following on a Federal-only client copy:

Letter, and bill on back of it (!)
1040 page 1 with page 2 on back of it (what we want)
Sch A, & Sch E p 2 on back of it (!)
Form 1116, & page 2 on back of it (what we want)
AMT version of 1116, page 2 on back of it (wanted)
Form 5329, & page 2 on back of it (wanted)
Schedule EIC, & 8812 on back of it (acceptable)
Form 8889, & "Page 1 of statements" on back (!)
Page 2 of statements all by itself as the last page

I suspect if Lacerte came out with an option within the program, to print duplex, it might even do the same kind of nonsense; who knows?

Thanks for your reply, Yes, what I want is a "smart duplex" that prints IRS 2 page forms on front & back. Ultratax does this. It would result in a tremendous savings in paper, postage and filing cabinet space.

Somebody is still using filing cabinets to store paper copies?... Why not save a tax return in PDF instead?

Yes, we are using DMS and phasing out of the filing cabinets. We still printed a file copy for 2006 returns, we're debating the file copy for 2007.

But that does not diminish the need for duplex printing. Currently the system will actually print the first page of the state return on the back of the last page of the federal return if it ends up that way. The technology is there, obviously Ultratax can do it, Lacerte should as well.

I'd be interested to see how many people have abandoned the printed file copy.

We have not changed the print functionality for 2007 If you print duplex and print multiple clients, you may end up with page 1 of the second client on the back page of the first client printed. This is the same as it has functioned for the last few years. Aside from that duplex printing should work, but it's not supported functionality.

My guess as to WHY it isn't supported, is it's probably a royal pain in the butt to program, and Lacerte employees probably have a hard enough time programming serious things like calculations, printing in accordance with IRS and/or state regulations, and whatnot. That's probably also why other bells and whistles that they started to do one year, didn't work so well and never got better.

I have no idea how other tax programs are in relation to duplex printing. That might be an interesting question to ask some colleagues who have other programs, but, who knows?

Sincerely,

Amy

I feel we pay Lacerte top dollar to have one of the best tax programs. I feel that is why they should keep improving the tax program and the add-on products. They should have enough employees to support and improve the program so it stays one of the best programs. I don't mind paying for the program as long as it is one of the best and keeps improving.
