Divide invoice between subcategories

US QuickBooks Premier : 2009: Retail

We have several subcategories under our revenues, rev category 1, rev category 2, rev category 3, and one customer may have revenues in 2 or more subcategories. How can we divide up the invoice betw subcategories. In our case, we need to divide up revenues between government orders and under government orders, under separate government contracts.

In Quicken, it is easy to split a transaction, but cannot seem to do this in QB. It looks like I can do this if each product we sell stays in a subcategory, but that is not the case. One product can be sold in more than one subcategory. Any guidance would be very much appreciated.

When you invoice customers, use 'items' associated with revenue accounts. You can add items (Lists>items) which you can associate with your different revenue accounts.

Thank you for trying to help us solve this issue. I think that is the problems. One item should be associated with different revenue accounts. So for example, we sell one widget to Customer 1 and one widge to Customer 2, but we want the revenues from the sales to show up in different revenue subaccounts, what should we do?

And we can't have all of the revenue for customer 1 in the same subaccount, because we want to classify some of the sales to customer 1 in one subaccount and some of the items we sell to customer 1 in another subaccount.

There must be an answer (I ask hopefully)!

The solution

Perhaps using class tracking would help as you can't split items. Turn class tracking on (under accounting preferences) and assign each government contract to a class. Go through all your income and expense accounts and assign a class then go through your items and assign an income account with the appropriate class. However, you still must list 'Item 1-class A' and 'Item 1-class B' as 2 line items on your invoices. You can then run reports defined by classes. If this does not help, please re-post. I do not have experience with the retail version of QB and perhaps there is an easier way. Good luck LevSP.
