Dependent Children have to file?
Does a dependent child receiving ssi benefits of 15K and no other income have to file a tax return? The child is less than 18 yrs old.

I just had a client (widow) whose kids received social security income in 2009. To see if the income was taxable, I set up a dummy return for the kid, put in the income amount (put in 16,000 as a test number). The return came up with ZERO tax due. So if "SSI" benefits are the same as social security benefits from the death of a parent, the answer is NO. (Assuming the SSI income was Box 5 income of the SSA-1099).
