Deleting Payroll Expense Account

US QuickBooks Pro for Windows

How do I delete the Payroll Expense account so it doesn't appear on reports? It says I can't delete it because it is linked to a payroll item, but there are no payroll items set up. When I run reports showing all accounts, the Payroll Expense line shows even though I made it inactive, though company has no payroll expense and does not intend to use QB for payroll. Same with the Payroll Liabilities account.

Open your report.

Modify>advanced>choose Active. . .or Non-zero (whichever give you the best for what you need)

Memorize this report for future use.

Please post back with your results.

Thanks, Laura. However, this may affect other accounts that I want to see on a report. I guess you are saying that there is no way to get rid of the payroll accounts when QB is not being used for any payroll purposes? We are "stuck" with them?

I don't know of any option to get rid of them.

If you set up a file with no COA and import your own, they won't be there until you turn on payroll.
