Yes to both of your questions -- 2% miscellaneous deduction

A train station is where the train stops. A bus station is where the bus stops. On my desk, I have a work station

UMK:

Would it not be commuting mileage if he is leaving his home and going to court?

Would the gun be deductible if the department provided a weapon and the police officer just liked this one better?

Corbanfs:

I am going to say maybe.

If he is leaving his house to go to court that is commuting miles just like leaving his home to go to the police station.  If he is leaving the police station - driving to court in his own car and then driving home the mileage from the police station to the court would be deductible.

As for the gun - is a gun required for the job and does the department supply one?  Is this a extra / different gun that he purchased?  If he needs A GUN and he already has A GUN is he required to purchase another gun or is he doing this because he likes this one better?

Dusty

most police departments these days do have policies regarding use of police cars-or additional equipment outside of issue-some are given an expense allotment-eg if policy allows him the use of a police car for personal use-and he turned it down

taxguy:

I agree.  But if it is un-reimbursed mileage it is still commuting if it is from home to court.
