In order for the lines not to show when the invoice is printed - go to printer setup for invoices - on the left hand side of the box - click the button that says "Do not print lines around each field.
You can modify the invoice. Open a new invoice. Above the invoice number you will see "Template" with a "Customize" button, click on the button.
A dialogue box will pop up - select the template you want to customer or select new (if you select new, follow the steps). After clicking on the edit button, you will get another dialogue box with several tabs. Select the items you want on the invoice, deselect the items you do not want on the invoice.
For further customization, click on the "Layout Designer" button to the right side of the dialogue box. This will bring up the invoice in a box where you can move items around, add, subtract, and edit items. Right click on the box, select "Properties" and the properties of that box you can alter will be made available to you - including the borders.
I think this is what you are looking for - the only grid on my invoices is the one created by the description/quantity/price boxes.
