CSV to IIF file conversion

US QuickBooks Pro for Windows

I'm setting up a new company file in QB, and want all the company's history in one place.

Online checking transactions from my bank are only for the past 120 days, all other activity is downloadable by statements in PDF format, so an online account synch is not an option if I want the full account history for last year.

The 120 day info downloads as a Excel CSV format file, so I had to manually appended all the additional PDF data using Excel, so far no issues.

Now how do I convert the CSV file into a IIF file, for import into QB Pro 2009 for a checking account?

And how come QB still hasn’t incorporated a better way to import raw data for checking account imports!!??

There is a great tool from www.bigredconsulting.com that you might want to look at ... the IIF Creator.

Hi.  I'm wondering if you've had experience with this product vs. the .csv to .iif product mentioned by another person posting below...

Thanks!

Thank you for the reply qbsrox! I'm downloading the trial version now to see how it works. I'll report back the results of this specific tool.

Keep them coming! If there is another tool, or utility out there or if there a better method for accomplishing this import I would love to know.

Thank you.

Glad I could help ... definitely post back - I love their tools! I use the QIF to IIF Converter several times a month for many clients, don't know what I would do without it anymore!

I tried the software linked at bigredconsulting by a member for trial. After quite a bit of time customizing parameters and getting the files set up to be compatible for .iif import, I finally got the .csv file I printed directly from my Quickbooks check register converted to an .iif file for import back into a different Quickbooks file. I used up all of my "free trial" transactions importing it all into Quickbooks, only to open the "new" imported register and find..everything (up to the 100 transactions) was entered perfectly except all the "amounts" were zero! Wonderful to have the names, dates, numbers of each transaction in proper order and all...but what good does it do if every check and deposit are at zero amounts? Might as well just type it all in by hand, as I had been doing so tediously before. So, although it may be possible to do it "properly" with this software, it certainly isn't easy to discover the way to do so, despite my meticulous reading and following of all instructions. Sorry, Big Red, maybe simplify your interface?

I still keep going back to the limitations Intuit has built in...why in the world would you make it possible to so easily copy over the many lists from one Quickbooks file to another, and completely impossible to do the same with an actual account register? Why am I even trying out 3rd party software in the first place, when the function  should be included automatically in the parent software?

Not very Intuitive, Intuit.

I found a wonderful program called CSV2QBO - it takes any CSV file and converts it into a QBO file and there ya go.  It's cheap too 49.95 - alot cheaper then the bigdog thing was - it's tricky in that you have to make sure the settings are completely matched up to the bank # you have in QB - as a default it uses Wells Fargo and even though my clients don't have WF for their bank it still works perfectly.  It saved me so much time I can't begin to tell you - I have 9 clients that I used to spend 3 days on nothing but their bank recs and now I can do them all in less then a full day of work.  One client took 8 hours with 15 pages average - that's a ton of data entry and being human, also alot of errors could be made by transposing something but not with this... it eliminates all the hassles.  I highly recomend it .  What I do is take the CSV file and put a name for who the checks were made out to in that column and tweak the CSV file before I convert it - good luck

Hi.  I did go to your website and am confused about whether I need the version with or without a source code.  Also, do I need to purchase the converter for EVERY bank and credit card company with whom I do business and wish to import data into QBs?

Thanks!

Hi Susanne,

No, you do not need the source code. The source code is only necessary to re-program the software to function differently.

The converter is priced per statement format.  For example, if you have two bank accounts with the same bank, their data is probably saved in the same format and you would need only one converter to handle both statements. QuickBooks posts bank account transactions differently from credit card transactions, so there are separate converters for those types of statements.

More detail on both of these topics is available on my website.  Thank you for your questions.

I am trying to import past bank statements in pdf format into Quickbooks ONLINE. I was excited about your software but after reading about it, it doesn't work with the online version. Darn. What can I do?? to get this info in without entering each item manually. I"m desperate!

From what I saw when I got a trial of ONLINE nothing is able to be imported into it. It's a very bare bones version and I wouldn't use it for anyone

Well, you ARE able to import your current bank statements into your chart of accts automatically. That is a wonderful feature. We have our set up now and the info gets uploaded everyday. Saves loads of entering time.

My issue is the bank will only go back 90 days, I guess from the time you set this up with them. I am trying to go back to the beginning of 2011 and upload info through September of 2011. The bank, only has these statements available online as PDFs.

I have found various interesting programs and software for converting one format to another but so far none match my particular situation. ...I guess that's when people create their own software, when they can't find it anywhere. So here is a creative oportunity for someone! I'm not computer savvy enough, just know what I want to do and can't find it.

I loved the Bigredconsulting software solution. It just didn't match what I was trying to do.

To make it more involved I'm on a Mac ( Lion though I have Leopard on one computer) and it's for QB ONLINE not the desktop version.

I downloaded 'deskunPDF for Mac'. It had good Mac forum reviews but doesn't seem to be doing it for me. My thoughts were I could convert the PDF bank statement to an Excel format and then import into QBonline. I'm still messing with it...as time ticks away... Also looked at Neat scanner for Mac and someone at Staples said it does convert bank satements but the reviews don't look good. Very glitchy.

Does seem like something that should just be part of QBonline, but it's an evolutionary program. Maybe one day??!

All this is to avoid entering the statements line by line. At this point, I could have been half way through!!

I was always able to "select all" then copy and paste off of PDF files into an excel and then do a lilttle cleanup of the garbage not related to transactions but I wil for sure check out the DeskunPDF you referred to here - thanks

Well, hours later, I found something that seems good but not sure it imports into QB.

With Wondershare PDF Converter Pro. I was able to on Mac lion convert a scanned PDF bank statement, with a bit of initial set up effort, to an excel spreadsheet. It worked great. But then I tried to import to QB via menu item Company>Chart of Accts>More>Import Data>Upload File.

so you attach the file there and hit continue. It all looked good with progress bar and all, however it didn't enter it. I'll continue to try though. Mt Everest style!:)

Once you get them into a CSV file go buy (49.95) and it works with all banks no matter what it is - as long as you can get a CSV file then this will work.  http://www.propersoft.net/csv2...

I have used this for months and it works like a charm - turns the CSV file to a QBO file and then import that.  Terrific customer service too.

I don't think that older versions of QB import qbo files, because Intuit keeps disabling that feature as new versions come out.  I have QB2009.  I can still import IIF files.  I was assuming that this thread was started by folks that didn't want to keep paying the upgrade fees and wanted to use the IIF import feature. I'll try the CSV to IIF tools. Thanks
