credits add to statement total instead of subtract

when a client has overpaid (creating a credit), the resulting statements add the amount to total due instead of subtract  from then on. It usually  also shunts the amount to past due aging amounts. how do I solve this?

This is not standard QuickBooks behavior.  Questions - How are you entering the payment?  Does the balance show correctly in your customer list ?

The client overpaid with a check. I posted it through receive payments which then gives her a credit. Since she was scheduled for another round of services the next week, it should have just been used towards payment for the next billing. Instead it adds to her bill. The actual register has the correct amount, this only shows up when I print statements. This used to happen in an earlier version of QB. This is frustrating to look so unprofessional on statements. I have to cross things out by hand and write in accurate amounts.  I'm probably going to export transactions to excel so I can print out an accurate statement for any client who has had a credit or overpayment on their account. I'd rather avoid having to design a system for billing to workaround QB statement bugs!!
