Course Materials

Hello. I am the Program Manager for the Intuit Education program and I would love to hear what you are using right now for materials. Do you create your own materials or use curriculum provided by a publisher? What is working? What isn't working quite so well? What additional resources are you looking for that we could help you with?

Hi: I teach 4 QB courses at a technical college in Utah.

QuickBooks for Non-Accountants uses the Intuit QB Learning Guide and a 50-page syllabus I wrote that adds a bunch of explanatory material that should have been in the book but isn't. Students use that in self-paced work with the book and syllabus in a computer lab where I am available to answer questions.

I also use the QB Learning Guide as a script for an 18-hour (6 sessions at 3 hours each) instructor-led lecture class taught in a computer lab where each student works along on their own computer. This is taught to folks from the community who want to know how to use or better use QB.
Most of what I have added over the years to further explain what's in the book is what makes up the big syllabus for the first class I mentioned above.

I also a teach a full-scale college course called Computerized Accounting that uses Doug Sleeter's QuickBooks Complete textbook. This one is also a self-paced course designed to take 60 classroom hours.

We break out two advanced chapters of the Sleeter book and couple them with the big two-months-of-accounting project at the end of that book and call the course Accounting Final Project.

I have yet to find any textbook that even comes close to the comprehensive, practical coverage that's in the Sleeter book.

My students are training to be accounting techs or clerks, going right from our classrooms into the workplace. They report that they are well prepared for QB work when they get their jobs.

Rich

Hi, I'm Peg.

I've been using QB for over 5 yrs but will be teaching QuickBooks in a classroom setting for the first time this coming week. My local business learning center purchased the 2006 QBPro site licenses and then ordered the 2006 QuickBooks Learning Guide for the students and provided me with the Instructor's CD that comes with the licenses. I was so pleased to find that the instructor's guide is an enhanced version of the student guide complete with handouts. I'm looking forward this new venture into the classroom.

I was hoping to find a course evaluation resource on this site. Is there one available?

Is the 50 page sylabus available? I'm getting ready to teach a 10 week, 20 hour a week class in an accounting technology program whose clients are referred from the Massachusetts Department of Employment and Training. There is a 4 page sylabus I "inherited" from the previous instructor.

In addition, I have access to the resources available online through the schools's site license, and a few other materials.

The students are mostly high school graduates in a 20 week program(10 weeks on computer skills, Word and Excell; 10 weeks on Accounting and Quickbooks) who are trying to get "entry level" accounting jobs upon completion of the program.

Would your outline be two extensive for this population?

Michael

I am embarking on teaching Pro to high school seniors that choose accounting as an elective course. I have purchased the Quick Learning guide, but would like to have a few other options. Both the 50 page syllabus and the short syllabus mentioned in this thread sound interesting. Are either available for sharing? Anyone know of any others? Thanks.

I just completed a presentation about QuickBooks for Accountants. I put my outline together from what I received during the free QuickBooks update which I attended last Friday.
I would love to have outlines prepared for particular attendees with differing levels of experience.
My group, unfortunately, was extremely diversified.
I am planning to present to larger groups of accountants who are specifically interested in learning how to teach their clients to use QB.

Also, I would like an outline of tricks and tips for the professional user. I find that no matter the attendee group, they are in awe of "control c" and "help" and "find" etc.etc. There are hundreds of tricks but not complied anywhere.
Thanks

Judy Rach

For the last 16 years, I've worked as a consultant setting up QB for small businesses, and training their staff in the day-to-day processes. But a couple of months ago, started teaching QB at a local community college in KY and like you find the Learning Guide does not cover enough, and especially with the variety of businesses presented by the students, a "standard" class does not cover it. I, like the others, was wondering if you offer your syllabus to others. I have several process sheets that I have done (actually more like check lists) and would be willing to share. If anyone else has information to share that has made a difference in their class, please let me know. You can e-mail me at jkerr62876@aol.com

I am currently finishing teaching a course in QB pro as part of a 5 month Accounting Technology Program. The program teaches High school graduates basic computer skills , Word, Excel, basic accounting theory and Quickbooks. I, too, was not thrilled with the various quides available, though I have used some of the Powerpoint Presentations from Intuit, and a CD called Mastering Quickbooks out out by TeachUComp, Inc. The Cd also has a Bsic and Advanced Manual that is a PDF document. I used the basic manual and several chapters from the Advanced manual and printed them out for my students. This version cover QB 2006, but also references and explains earlier versions (2003-2005).
I also found a book called Quickbooks 2006, The Missing Manual(app. $22 on Amazon) which I recommended students get. It's one of the better books out there.

I am a retired automotive accountant (mostly ADP) who would like to learn the Quicken system. Would any of the materials listed in this thread be a suitable place to begin? If not, do you have any suggestions of better sources?

Hi Rich,
I'll be using the Sleeter text for the first time this spring (2008) in the community college setting. Would you be willing to share your materials with me?
Thanks in advance,

Thank you for this post. It shows you care and are willing to help us help others learn QuickBooks.

For me, I am just an ordinary gal. I am a Landlord and a Certified QuickBooks Pro advisor. I don't have any degrees after my name, and I don't teach in any college or school, but I am a heck of a teacher when it comes to QuickBooks, and I do it one on one through the Internet by a software program called GoToMeeting and Skype which allows me to see the students computer and they can see mine and we can talk to each other while I watch them, or they watch me teach them how to use QuickBooks.

I also have written a book called The New & Improved Landlord and Property Managers Guide to QuickBooks.

I realize that Intuit cannot design QuickBooks to fit every one's Industry right down to the nitty gritty. That's why QuickBooks allows us to CUSTOMIZE it to fit our needs.

What I'd like to see done is for Intuit to listen to their Teachers, and Certified QuickBooks Pro Ad visors when they call them and tell them that they'd like to see this done or that done. To at least give them a feedback as to whether or not they will do the suggestion or not.

I have designed many things in QuickBooks that I don't think anyone else has designed. And that's because I really like QuickBooks. I've used every software program out there and none compared to QuickBooks so I decided I was going to learn this thing if it were the last thing that I'd do. However there are some things that I'd like to see changed.

I've called Intuit to ask that they put a Class Field in the Receive Payment Section of QuickBooks so that when I make a deposit or my Clients make a deposit that the class section of the Deposit Sheet will be filled out for them automatically. It is in every other format, except in the Deposit Slip.

As it is now, when one makes a deposit one must manually enter in the class on the Deposit Slip, and when you have tons of deposits (which is a good thing) it takes a long time!

When a Property Manager has many clients who has many tenants, it's very difficult for them to have to manually type in the class on the deposit slip or to even know who that tenant belongs to or what address. And if they take it off the check or money order they are actually having to enter in data twice.

When one receives the payment and is able to type in the Class right there in the Payment Received Section, they are able to choose from the class menu the Owner or the Tenant or the Address, depending on how they had setup their classes. Then when they click on Deposit and choose all the depositors the class is already filled out for them. What a time saver! And prevents a lot of errors.

I would also like to see the Finance Charge Statement Section allow us to Customize it more. We can Customize the Header to say what we want but we cannot change the word Finance Charge in the body of the Statement. Some of us charge late fees, and not Finance Charges, but use the same concept as the Finance Charge Feature.

This presents a problem when landlords and property managers go to bill their tenants for late fees. Once again, I can change the Header from Finance Charge to Late Fees, but finance charge will always show up as the item. This confuses the tenants because they wonder what the finance charge is for.

The products I use to teach are screen shots right from QuickBooks. As a matter of fact in my book I use more visuals to teach then the written word. I believe people want to be shown how more than all the explanations. However, in the online class, we get into it all and it's done live.

I have been teaching QB at a community college since the mid-90s. I am in the process of preparing an on-line version of the course. I just received a copy of Ulmer's Computer Accounting with QB2008. It comes packaged with a 140 day student trial version of 2008. I prefer a different textbook and I am pressuring the publisher to package this trial version with their book. The 140 day trial would be ideal for teaching a semester-length course. Does or will Intuit make this 140 day trial version available for downloading?

I hope this helps. If you feel that this answers your question or otherwise solves your problem, please mark this thread as "Solved." If not, please post a follow-up question or comment.

I have been teaching QuickBooks in a classroom setting for 10 years. I developed my own course materials and have updated them with every new version of QuickBooks. I only teach a maximum of 6 students at a time and I have broken the material into a full day class for basic quickbooks and a separate 1/2 day class just for payroll.

I also do one-on-one training for individuals covering the same material but substituting their company datat for my classroom data.

I have been very successful with this program and have trained over 450 students.

I would like access to your materials as well.  This is great because the materials we study to become proadvisors is too cumbersome to train others in a classroom setting.  How would I have access to your course materials for QuickBooks?

Would you be willing to share your curriculum for the full day and 1/2 day class? I am starting to teach a QB class at a local community college. It is an all day class. There is so much involved in Quickbooks I could use some help on just how much I should expect to cover in 6 hours time and what you feel is the most important to cover in that short time frame. Thanks in advance.
