I have a correctional officer client who says they can claim a meal allowance and deduct it as an unreimbursed employee expense and thought it was $7 per day. I can't find any research on it, can somebody help me on this. Thanks.
I had a police officer claiming the same thing, except it was $7.50 a day. I called both the IRS and the state of Iowa. Both said he must be able to show there is a duty related restriction and has to have meals while on duty. The police officer brought a page from his policies manual that had a section regarding lunch breaks. I couldn't find out anything about the $7.50 dollar amount though.
