Convert your QuickBooks file

QuickBooks 2008 can directly upgrade company files only from QuickBooks 2004 or later. If your company file was created in QuickBooks 2003 or older, please refer below.

To work around this issue, you can download and use the QuickBooks Conversion Kit. Use of this kit is free. For more details, see see Upgrading from QuickBooks 2003 or older.

Hi Pannobaji,

1. Install QB Pro 2008 on your new computer
2. Is your data file a QuickBooks data file (.QBW) or a QuickBooks backup file (.QBB)? We need to know this because there is a different way to restore it if it is a QBB file.
3. No matter which type of data file it is, we need to first copy the file from the USB stick onto the desktop of your computer.
4. Open up the 2008 program. If your data file is a .QBW, then simply navigate to File>Open or Restore Company. Click on 'Open a company file'. Look for the file on the desktop and open it. It will present you with a conversion process window that will guide you through the upgrade. Just follow the prompts on the screen. If your data file is a .QBB, then you will need to goto File>Open or Restore Company>Restore a backup copy. Follow the prompts on the screen to open your backup and go through the conversion process.
5. After that is complete, your file is all set to go in the 2008 version. :) Depending on the size of your file, it might take some time during the conversion process.

Cheers!
Eric

Don't forget to register and update your QB 2008 after you install it.

Hi Pann,

You can find out the extensions of your data files by right-clicking on the file and choose "Properties". It will show you the file types.

As per your data file, it looks like they are .QBW files. They are not backups and you can simply open them by going to File>Open Company. As for the .QBA, they are Accountant's Review copy. They will not convert over to 2008. You only take the .QBW file.

After the file is converted, you can create another Accountant's copy then.

Eric

Hello,
I am trying to convert from QuickBooks Pro 5.0 to QuickBooks Pro 2008. I have downloaded the 2007 conversion kit, but when I try to update the company files, it gives me the error that I do not have the QB 2007 disc in the drive. Any ideas?
Sincerely,

Daniel Zwart

Hi Daniel,

Looks like you are converting a "legacy" file which requires more than the QuickBooks Conversion kit. The reason why it is asking for the CD is because your 5.0 file needs to be upgraded to R7 and then R8 before it can be converted to the newest version. And the conversion file for R7 and R8 is found only on the CDs.

I suggest you contact us to arrange to have your file sent to us so we can convert it to QB2008. Or else you will need to find a copy of the QB07 CD to assist you in the conversion.

Eric
