I use the new QB to select the back up file from my previous version of QB. It flies through loading the files and seems like all is going fine, but at the very end says file "could not be opened. There was a problem converting this file."

I maybe wrong here but I think that you will need to open the company data file itself (Not a backup file).. I think the backup file can only be opened by the Version that created it. You do have the actual data file Don't you.  QB will update it to the new QB2012 automatily. Try that and let us know how it  goes.

Good Luck

The only thing I have is a back up file. My accountant is able to open up the back ups on her PC and she's running a Windows version of QB, while I created the file on a mac with a different QB version. So it seems that the new QB for Lion should be able to restore my company files from a backup made with QB for Leopard.

The file has to be a backup for windows if your accountant can open it on a PC.

If your accountant has QB2012for the PC, have them make a copy for mac on the windows QB. and send it to you , Put it on your desktop, and than open your QB2012 for Mac, and see if you can open that file.

were the backups for pc or for mac, If they opened on the pc sounds like that may be an issue, Mac QB can not read or open PC data files or backups.

Good Luck.

PS do you have access to the actual Mac data file.

I'll have my accountant make a back up and send to me. I also sent to Intuit tech and they say they can fix the file to be compatible with 2012 QB. It's taking them awhile to do, but we'll see what happens.

 Hi

Make sure when your accountant goes to his I believe "file menu" and it should Say I believe."Copy for Mac", and hopefully you will be able to open that as long as your accountant is using QB2012 as well.

Good Luck and Please let us know how it goes.

Intuit's team just returned my backup file, repaired so that it's compatible with 2012 version. And it worked! This new 2012 QB is really cool, can see now I was living in the dark ages with 2005 version!

Thanks for all your advice!
