client letter problems

ProSeries : 2011

The client letter that prints with the return is not correct on the 2nd page (tax summary and instructions for filing) when there is an overpayment and part of that overpayment is being applied to 2012 tax and part of it is being refunded. Help!

I just noticed this error also.  I guess we will have to edit the Client Letter to correct this ourselves and hope ProSeries eventually fixes it.  They should have checked this more carefully!   Mine says "Your federal return shows an overpayment of $0.00.  Of this amount, $1,153.00 will be applied to your 2012 estimates."  The same sentence, written correctly, shows up a second time later on page.  Also, the refund applied amount shows up twice in the top section of the page.

I will check it tomorrow. Perhaps the <trigger> is reading the wrong line in the return, so you can change the <trigger> and save it in the default standard letter. then all subsequent letters will be correct.

Back mañana.

I am seeing this problem when I have an efiling return. The efile overpayment and credit is correct, but the letter also shows a non-filing overpayment and credit. It should not show the non-efiling O/P and credit at all.

Since it is not a non-efiling return, the non-efiling O/P shows zero.  It should not show the non-efiling O/P and credit at all. (I am repeating this for emphasis).

Will investigate on a real return, hopefully soon.

This trigger was there last year, too, but I probably never had such an issue. This is only for non-efiling returns that have both an overpayment and a partial credit to estimates. It does not appear(and it should not appear) when efiling and when there is no partial refund/credit, but it does appear when there is both efiling and a partial refund/credit. This is wrong.

This line is also appearing twice for no apparent reason:

Federal refund applied to next year................................................

$

<@FDIEFApp>

[@FDIEFApp]

[@FDIAppEst]

Your federal return shows an overpayment of $<@FDIOverpy>. Of this amount, $<@FDIAppEst> will be applied to your <@FDINxtYear> estimates.

This only happens when there is a partial refund/credit, not when all the O/P gets refunded(at least when efiling).

I found a 2010 return that was efiled and had a partial credit/refund, and this did not happen last year. The extra "non-efiling partial credit/refund" paragraph did not appear on an e-filing return.

Definitely a programming error.

That's definitely a mistake in the letter.  I've monkeyed around with it for awhile, and can't figure out a workaround.  I'll sound the alarm.

This has been an ongoing problem for a couple of weeks now.  We noticed it and called Pro-Series on it.  They said they are aware of the problem and hopefully the fix will be forthcoming.  Obviously it hasn't come yet as my boss just alerted me that it has not been fixed yet.  Hopefully with more complaints they will get on it ASAP!!

I hope that when (if?) they fix it, they don't just overwrite the letter with a new version.

Many of us have heavily modified the client letter, and I would hate to see that wiped out.

Yikes!  I hadn't even considered that.  So we need to get into our Common folder and make backups of fdiltr  files.

I think that fdiltr.rtf is the one that matters.  But don't hold me to that, better back them both up. I keep copies of each year's *ltr.rtf and *inv.rtf in a folder with my Word templates anyway.  I have them going back 10 years or more. That way I can make working copies to mess around with and (hopefully) improve, without unintentionally losing a bunch of customization. If there is a way to delete an unbacked-up file, I'll invariably find it.

The .rtf is the letter you modify. The .ltr is the letter before you modified it - it's the back up used to restore to the default.
