City + County + State Sales Tax Setup

US QuickBooks Premier

I successfully created sales tax items for City, County, and State rates. Whenever we make a sale we charge state sales tax only if the person is in state but out of the county, state plus county if they are out of the city but in our county, and city plus county plus state if they live in the same city as we operate. There is no way to setup a sales tax item with multiple rates/taxing authorities. I managed to set up State Only, State+County, and City+County+State groups but I am unable to use that to tax them on an invoice ... How can I set this up?

Let me clarify this ...

Each tax is collected by a different taxing authority (Alabama Department of Revenue, Madison County, City of Huntsville)

I am required to charge state sales tax of 4% to those within the state of Alabama
I am required to charge county sales tax of 0.5% to those within the county of Madison
I am required to charge city sales tax of 3.5% to those within the city of Huntsville

So ... I have four cases of taxation:

1) Out of state : no sales tax is due
2) In state but outside of my county : State tax only is due
3) In my county but out of my city : State + County tax is due
4) In my city : State + County + City tax is due

At the end of my life I don't want to pass quietly into the night. I want to slide in sideways kicking and screaming "WOW What An Awesome Ride!"

Life really is good ... Soak it up while you can ...

The solution

Use a sales tax group.  Create the individual sales tax items for the individual taxing authorities, then combine them into sales tax groups to meet the requirements of the different areas you mention.
