After hearing far to many sad stories like this I now insist that QuickBooks automatically backup EVERY TIME we exit, besides having my entire data drive copied to alternating backup drives each night. This is almost sure to be a damaged data file, so first make a Windows Copy of the file so you can try it on a new system. Then File, Utilities, Rebuild. Otherwise, you need to restore a backup and then Rebuild or use the Intuit QuickBooks Data Recovery people, with a ProAdvisor like me and a QuickBooks 2010 upgrade making it inexpensive.

I tried to back up my info. onto a disk but QB's could  not verify my data, so it  wouldn't save.  UGH!! Now what? Do you have any other suggestions?  I should definitely try to save before I do anything else, yes?  What is required to get the intuit help you spoke of?

Hi Cef109

Unless you contact me, or have a profile with your email address, I cannot contact you for follow up. I do not know if you will see this because this forum was to close by 8/30.

My first big question is how old is your last good backup? If it is recent you may want to simply restore that.

I initially said, "first make a >>>>WINDOWS<<<<  COPY of the (QuickBooks) file so you can try it on a new system." WINDOWS COPY does not mean QuickBooks copy, backup or Rebuild! You make a Windows copy of a QuickBooks file the same way you make a Windows copy of any file, WITH QUICKBOOKS CLOSED. Use Windows Explorer by right clicking your mouse on the Windows Start button on the bottom left of your desktop. Choose Explore. Click through your folders until you get to the QuickBooks data file, which ends in QBW. If you cannot find it you can do a Search from the root of your applicable drive. Search for *.qbw changed within the last week or month. The QBW file you want should be the largest and most current file in the Detail view. When you get to the QB file you right click it and drag it to a new folder or drive. When you release the mouse button a menu comes up. Choose copy.

Once you have a Windows copy of the file, preferably on a different non-floppy disk, you can do the File,  Utilities, Rebuild. However, see if you can turn off Verify before QuickBooks makes the related Backup. I do not recall it lets you do this.

If a QuickBooks file has corruption like this, and you do not know what to do, you should get help before  opening it again. Each time you open it may be the last time anyone can open it. I can do this for you remotely for a $39 minimum. If I can clean up your file it will be $99  total. The best way to do this is to upgrade to  QB2010. Then the  QuickBooks Data Recovery  people fix ProAdvisor upgrade related problems free.  However, you do not have a working file and I do not expect QB2010 out until  mid-September to mid-October. Even so, I would definitely buy an extra copy of QuickBooks 2009 now, because it will let you get a "Free QB2010". See my http://QuickBooks-blog.com/ article on this.
