Can't import portable file
My portable file won't import. get error message that it isn't a valid QB portable file (same type of portable file as usual) file doesn't show up in list of what to save

The portable company file will have a .qbm extension after it's name. You choose File, open or restore company, then browse to where you have the portable company file and choose the file with the qbm extension on it. Then it will ask you where you want to save it. I'm a little confused with your question because you don't usually import a portable company file. You restore it similarly to the backup file.
Importing is associated with the accountant's copy file where you have changes your accountant made that you import to your file when they come to you. Are you possibly trying to import those changes? If so then you choose Accountant's copy from the File menu. Then choose import accountant's changes
