The solution

Looks like you don't touch it.  It gets populated automatically based on data entered elsewhere on the return.

If this answers your question please click, um, ok I forgot what you are supposed to click. If this answered your question, how about just saying thanks and we will call it good.

Complete the entry on Schedule D and it will populate the 8949 accordingly.

Also, note that you no longer need to enter the dates sold and bot if you enter the "L" and "S" for long or short term holding period. You can attach the Realized Gain Loss Schedule to the 8949 as needed.

Umk, why not the dates? Obviously, you could have always enter L or S and the sales would go on the correct part of D, but why is 2011 different?

F8949 has the headings for the dates.

I agree.  And at the Vern Hoven seminar I attended this week, they told us that the IRS expects to see the dates.

In the past if you were trying to combine several stock sales into one line you could enter various for dates purchased, but that was not acceptable for dates sold.    It is still that way on Sch D, but not on the Part 10 Summary in the worksheet.

Wonder why ProSeries doesn't require that field to be entered beginning in 2011? (i.e., the field doesn't turn red//pink). Perhaps they don't require it because of the new reporting requirements?
