can you change the cost of an item and not have it affect history? We have an
item, "custom countertop" and every time we sell it, its a different cost and retail. Is there a way to keep one item and change the cost and retail by job or do I have to set up a new item each time?
QB is a cost basis accounting system. Just changing the cost of an item with no basis, meaning real costs, of the item you are selling can't happen and from an accountant standpoint, thank goodness.
You can increase the cost of an item in any number of ways like including it as a part of a build, but to just increase the cost without any real costs associated with the item you are selling is not cost basis accounting.
Certainly there is another way around it to give you the conclusion you desire which is to increase the cost.
QB keeps average cost, that is a function of purchases.
Including an item in a build with other items does nothing to the average cost of the item. The average cost of the item is summed with the other items in the BOM to get the total cost of the NEW assembly item.
Your custom countertop starts with a basic material, do you buy that material as you need it to make one countertop, or do you stock some of the material and use a piece to cut the size needed?
