Can TP file MFJ for Fed & file MFS for state of PA
Can TP file jointly for Fed and file MFS for the state of PA? If so, can ProSeries do it?

It does not matter since PA does not allow losses from one spouse to offset the other spouse's income anyway. But if you want to do it, you can. How?
Prepare the federal as MFJ, and code everything TP or SP. This includes Sch. D.
Then go to PA and check box on the Info w/s for MFS. THIS WILL PREPARE THE TP's RETURN ONLY.
To get the SP's PA MFS return, you must do a split of the federal return. {File}{Split MFJ return}. You do not need to save the TP's split return, only the SP's. Then Open the SP's, check the federal to be sure the correct amounts are included, then go to the PA return.
You will need to get a separate instruction sheet for the SP.
Thank you Accountant Man, I really appreciate the answer very much. The only reason that I want to do MFS because TP lived in PA and SP lived in TX and TP had only one W2, no itemize. SP has more income, K-1 and a home.
Makes sense, and then you do not need to prepare a PA return for SP.
