Can I show package prices - using individual items?

US QuickBooks Pro for Windows : 2011

How can I show incremental prices on an estimate without itemizing everything to the customer? I would like to use individual items to create my estimates (which are 4 pages long at times) but show the customer only about 10 'package' prices.  Example: We are in the home manufacturing business, and I would like to be able to price say, a bathroom, using individual fixtures.  But I want the customer only to see the total Bath Package price.  I can use sub-totals - but is there a way to print only the sub-totals for the customer and not everything else?

Yes can be a pain to set up though

create a non inventory item called place holder and select an expense account, zero cost zero price

create a group item called bathroom, enter the description and include that one place holder item, set the group to not print all items

make one of those type groups for each room, type of job you need when you need them

on the invoice list the group item bathroom, right click on the place holder item and select insert line, then select the moen fixtrue you will use, do that right click.insert line as many times as you need

use print preview to see how it looks

If I've helped, mark it solved.

That works for the standard packages...  But I may not have explained my question clearly.  I really would like to have the description of each item in my group print, but not their prices.  As an example, I would like to be able to enter our standard bath package, then add lines to upgrade to a larger shower, and a larger vanity, add a medicine cabinet, etc. But I want each of these upgrades to print their discriptions, but only one total price at the bottom of the package. With groups it either prints each individual description AND the individual prices, or it prints neither.  Without it printing the individual descriptions I would have to manually change the 'group desctiption' every time I customize the package...which is sure to get missed.

(It really would be cool if I could add another column on my quotes & invoices, then have a subtotal item that throws its price into that column.  Then I could set it to print only this new column of subtotals and not the column with individual item prices.)

The solution

You've come accross the limitation in QB where pricing is concerned

all you can do to get around it, is to set all items to a zero price and include an other charge item for the total price which you would have to maually calculate and enter

the other charge item could say something like Total for all the above, or Thanks for allowing us to work for you, etc

Click  solved (thumbs up) if you think it is

Thanks.  I thought I may be asking to much of QB, but wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything. Groups are something I didn't mess with before, so you've taught me a thing or two.  I guess I will have to either lower my expectation or use other software.  Thanks again for the input.
