Bug in the part year allocation worksheet in federal

ProSeries : 2011

part year allocation worksheet-for seperate states-married joint--have done without issue where did not have to split an individuals w-2

here 2 of the 3 must be manually split--for whatever reason after the first one-the program just keeps creating an extra line you cannot delete-you can't get the state and number on the same line--just an endless loop

anybody have this issue

appears to be spouses w-2 entries   that causes issue

have not had a chance to "fake W2" enter wages for both states-when only one is shown

If I am busy doing nothing--how do I know when I'm done?????????

I do not split individual items of taxable income. I simply put a Community Property adjustment on Form 1040 Line 21. If they itemize deductions, I put a community property adjustment on Sch A Line 28. This serves the purpose without frying your brain or your computer.

When anyone doing nothing needs help, I will gladly help that person do nothing.

I haven't done any this year but I know I've been tripped up on this in the past.  Similar problem a line/box opens up without a way to delete it.  Unfortunately I have to relearn every time what the trick is.  Make sure you enter your PY/NR states at the bottom of the Info Wks.  Then check your W-2 inputs, finally come back to the PY allocation sheet and see what automatically shows up vs. what you have to enter manually.  I remember if you do things in the wrong order you end up with an extra PY sheet that has to be removed.

Then some state returns pretty much ignore the PY allocation sheet and you have to fiddle around with the numbers in the state return anyway. <shrug>

Sorry I'm not any more help.  I haven't done any PY returns yet this year.

Rick

I just did one where the client lived in PA and worked in GA.  It worked good (once I entered in all the correct information).  Mine ended being a problem with 1099-R - I did not put the state that it applied to in the 1099-R and it allocated it to GA - should have been allocated to PA.

Joint or single dusty

unfortunately--this monster is two states-now 4 office in home- with 2 C's 3-w2's-it's the spouses second w2 that caused the issue--that's an awful lot of stuff to make work-not to mention some logging and land rentals tossed in

i've already done 2 with no issue--so have to assume it's the multiple entry stuff thats tripping up the works

will go back add the missing state onto the w2 line and fake the wages--hoping that'll make it all work

I do sometimes have to "fix" the state portion of the W-2.  Let us know if you track it down or if there's really a bug somewhere.  With so much going on in your return I hope it's just something coded incorrectly.  Multi-state returns are enough of a pain without having to fight the software (well, more than usual).

I tossed this to the Tax Experts - here is the response:

This happens when the customer has one or more states on a single W2 and one of the states is a non-taxing state. If you are in this situation, don't enter the entries for the non-taxing state. It just confuses the program when there is not enough information.

thanks,

Dave

Thanks Dave for the info.....have had this happen in the past and spent a lot of time resolving and like above entry can never remember how I got it to work!  Know I have one coming in Friday that would cause the problem.  Great to know how to handle from the beginning so there will be no issue.

in this case the two states are also reciprocal--so the software is trying to come to grips with the fact that normally all income is only taxed in one--that also may be in play with the states and the software

@ mod Dave - I know it's not your job, but this is one of the worst years for programming I've seen in a long time.  They can try to blame it on the transition to MeF, but c'mon...  How many years notice have they had to start programming and adjusting for this change?  It's not as if this is something that just came up.  Now I understand that there are other software programs also struggling, but still -  we do expect results, not excuses, which is what we seem to be getting.
