BAR CODE SCANNER DOES NOT CORRECTLY READ UPC-E

I tried scaning a can of Mountain Dew with an 8 digit barcode using POS v4 and the same HPP IT3800 scanner.

It read and inserted the correct 8 digit number.

A cd or manual did not come with our scanner either.

Our scanner is a "Keyboard wedge" type and is connected to the PS2 keyboard port - NOT a USB port.

A set-up diagram DID come with the scanner showing the correct way to connect the scanner and keyboard to the PS2 port.

POS must have a 13 dig. minimum for the UPC field. Its just how the program was written, POS needs to convert any UPC's into a type 39 bar code format. So, because it populates the UPC field with zeros dont be alarmed. It's normal. This also goes for using the import template in POS. If importing UPC's for items you must make sure that you highlight all UPC's in the import template, right click on the highlighted UPC's and then choose format cells, choose custom in the category window, and choose the 0000000000000, then ok

Let's take an example from 12 oz Coke can. It's UPC code on the surface of the can is 04963406. When scanned, it shows 0000049634068.
Is it OK? My understanding was, considering manufacturer's id, it should read like 0049000006346. This number also can be obtained after I remove head (0) and tail(6) of the upc code.
Your assistance in this matter will be appreciated.

My guess is that your scanner needs to be programmed so it can recognize that it's reading a shorter UPC-E label.

I scanned all or our inventory into Quickbooks POS with no problem...Until now. Scanner is not reading any of the barcodes. I have tried to reset it, But that did not work. The Only thing that has changed since hardware was installed is that we disconnected the credit card scanner from the hhp scanner. That is when all the trouble began.I have run out of ideas. Can anyone Please help me with this.

Thank You for the help. It turns out that the computer wizards that hooked up our systems, did not plug it in correctly. So after I read everything there is to read about the scanner, I went to the store and bought an adapter, and it started right away. Thank You for the web site, that helped me realize the problem.
