Important Announcement! A planned system-wide upgrade will take place over the Memorial Day Weekend in the US (From Thurs, May 24, 2012 at 6 pm PDT thru Tues, May 29, 2012 at 5 am PDT). This includes QuickBooks, QuickBooks Payroll, Point of Sale, & Salesforce.com. This is only for US based products. This does not affect QuickBooks Online customers! During this time, you can shop, but can’t place orders online, activate products or update account info. We apologize for the inconvenience & thank you for patience while we improve our infrastructure to better serve you. International versions are unaffected. Backing up with a new company name.

US QuickBooks Pro for Windows : 2011

I want to experiment with a company file, so I made a copy of the file, opened it, and changed the company information. That changed the name displayed at the top of the window, but when I do a backup of the new company file, QB insists on namng the backp file the same company name as the original. How do I change that?

Only way I have found, close QB, use windows explorer and find the company files that you copied, one at at time change the file name to TEST

then open QB and use file open to find and open the new test file

If I've helped, mark it solved.

I renamed the company files and opened the new company file name from the open file menu. That didn't resolve the problem. In fact, now I'm oncertain about which file I'll get. To remove that uncertainty, I'm going to delete everything and restore from a backup.

Suggestions are still welcome, though, since I still want to accomplish the spilt.

The solution

 Lets start from scratch then

in windows explorer create a new folder called QB-test

Copy the company files to that new folder

In that folder rename the files to test test

open QB and use file open, and navigate to that new folder and open the test test company file, use the menu company>company info and change the name to TEST TEST

then I like to open preferences and under desktop select an ugly color scheme to make it even more obvious

Thank you, Rustler. I had to open the new file a couple of times before it completely stuck, but it seems to be working alright now.
