Advice for a Newbie - Quickbooks 2007

Can I get some guidance??? I am a CPA that has worked extensively with ERP systems such as Great Plains and JDEdwards. I have aspirations of leaving the rat race and working from home. I'm now looking to pick up a small client (small electronics business) on the side and was thinking of getting QuickBooks 2007. The client himself uses Quickbooks 2006. I could import his transactional detail to my 2007 version to do his monthly books, correct? What about payroll???I have not acquired the software yet, but am still deciding if I will pick up this client or not. Does anyone have any guidance or suggestions??? It would be appreciated.

You can backup his data and restore to your Quickbooks. The data then will be converted to the 2007 version. Once this is done it cannot go back to his 2006 version. All adjustments you make will need to be manually entered into the clients Quickbooks. My recommendation is to have client upgrade to the same version so that you can move data between your computer and his/hers.

Dan

You can use the clients info by updating a backup (.qbb) or copy (.qbw) file to 2007 version - however, you could not export back to his version.

I would definitely recommend getting the Premier Accountant Version of 2007, its well worth the extra cost.

So many clients are on Qbooks now, and many upgrade to the newer version. Personally, I think its a good purchase if you are serious about picking up more clients.

I third the vote to invest in the 2007 software for yourself. It is fantastic and you will soon start to see clients who have already upgraded.

As far as supporting (doing the write-up work) for you potential new client who is using 2006 software, another option (other than having the client upgrade to 2007) would be to do their work direction on their computer from your home office using the free Remote Access (WebEx) account you get with the QB Premiere Accountant edition. You and your client need a high speed internet connection, and you're good to go. You do not need to have 2006 software on your computer since you'll actually be working on your client's computer!

Has anybody running QB Accountant Premier 2007 had any problems posting for example bills and when you click save & close you get frozen up. The only way to get out of it is go to task manager and you see that the program is not responding, you do this a couple of times and finally the bill posts and it goes back to running, until you save & close another transaction and then it freezes again.

There can be many reasons for lock ups, which have nothing to do with QB. Describe your machine: Operating System, RAM, Hard Drive Free Space, AV, Chkdsk recently, Defrag recently, etc. Do you have a broadband connection: cable, DSL?
