Accounts Payable vs Notes Payable

US QuickBooks Pro for Windows

I have a payable that has been on the books a long time. I want to get rid of the payable and change it to a note payable. If I debit A/P and credit N/P the bill will still be sitting there as a payable. How do I get rid of the payable itself?

The solution

Enter a bill > Select Credit > On the expense tab  enter Notes Payable.
Then Pay Bills screen > Select the bill & then click set credits. THis will zero both out.
