Important Announcement! A planned system-wide upgrade will take place over the Memorial Day Weekend in the US (From Thurs, May 24, 2012 at 6 pm PDT thru Tues, May 29, 2012 at 5 am PDT). This includes QuickBooks, QuickBooks Payroll, Point of Sale, & Salesforce.com. This is only for US based products. This does not affect QuickBooks Online customers! During this time, you can shop, but can’t place orders online, activate products or update account info. We apologize for the inconvenience & thank you for patience while we improve our infrastructure to better serve you. International versions are unaffected. For more info, see our community discussion.

Whose social security number is on the statements?

Hail Cleo-Cat-Tra, Queen of Denial. I didn't do it.

Income is reported on return with matching SS#.  In other words, if it's the kid's SS# (mine always are), then it's includable on the kid's return IF they have enough other sources of income to require a return (the $950 threshhold for unearned income requiring a return only includes taxable SS).  Fortunately, for most, if all they get is SS, they don't need to file and it doesn't get reported anywhere.  My widows include it in their files every year and I always ask just to make sure Junior didn't get a job that requires they file a return (even if it's just to get back their withholding taxes.)  Also, you may want to alert your widow that when kids get to be college age, the financial aid forms have lines for that type of income that must be disclosed, even if not taxed.

Also, their S.S. may make her unable to claim them as dependents, depending on her income.  She has to prove more than half of their support.
