2011 year end adjustment requiring a credit to Retained Earnings and debit to Sales

US QuickBooks Pro for Windows

Need to make 2011 year end adjustment. I have been instructed to credit Retained Earnings and debit Sales. I am finding that from the Chart of Accounts, when I try to open either of those accounts to make the entry I am not able to do so. Help?
