does the system automatically save the return I am working on when I exit the program

Yes, Lacerte saves the data when you exit the program. You also have some choices about how often the program should save data while you're still inside the program (every minute, every 2 minutes, every 5, etc).
Settings, Options, Setup, and then several lines down is the "detail save" option I refer to above.

It also saves every time you calculate the return, such as when you move from the input screen to the forms view.

I would set your program to save the return every 2 minutes so you do not lose data input previously
