What kind of business do you want? Do you want to increase your number of clients? Do you want to increase the average revenue you receive from each client by adding new services? Do you like doing certain types of work. Do you dislike certain types of work?

Also are you just starting or do you have a client base?
What do you offer - bookkeeping? payorll? tax? ??
We need more detail before any one can help.

Thank you all so much for the feedback and for being so persistent. I am a new tax preparer and i received my license about 3 years ago. I am coming up on my third tax year and now am really looking to grow this part of my practice. I probably have about 30 clients and this was in a transition stage where i couldn't fully push this part of my practice. Now i am ready to grow, but not exactly sure how to go about that. Does anyone have any good ideas that worked for you, marketing, cold calling, anything?

Start talking--tell everyone you are looking for new clients--friends, family, church members, other parents, neighbors, etc. Pass out cards and ask for referrals for bankers, lawyers, insurance agents, etc. Consider offering your current customers a discount for referring a new client to you. Attend events--chamber meetings. luncheons, etc. You can do it, but it does take some time.

I'm getting clients from people that know me and from ads on Craigslist.org and Backpage.com.
Present QB classes. If you mail 3,000 flyers it will cost around $1,250. You'll probably get 8 to 15 people sign up at $97 each to come to your office for a half day. You recover your ad cost and you get to spend 4 hours with a room full of prospects.
Join industry associations and arrange seminars for members through the officers of the associations. This would be especially true if the association hosts seminars on various topics to its members in that industry and if you are targeting that industry for clients.

Direct mail, internet advertising, and Craig's List work for me. I send several thousand postcards each tax season to individuals offering a discount if they use us for tax preparation. I also do direct mail letters to new and existing businesses in the area and follow up with a phone call to the businesses if they do not respond. I also get referrals since I pay $20 for each one.
I just got some of the "Guerilla Marketing" books. Great stuff. I especially like the one about marketing for free.
