Advice on Starting Accounting Business

US QuickBooks Pro for Windows

I would love a reality check on starting an accounting/QB Proadvisor business with my background. I recently sold my business, which was an ecommerce site and b&m store focused on maternity/baby products. I used QB and QB POS for the business, and became quite knowledgeable about both. Did payroll, adjustments, reporting, etc. I also majored in accounting in college (although never worked in the traditional accounting/auditing field, and never sat for the CPA).

I would love to help new businesses set up QB and QB POS, and also offer general QB knowledge. My concern is not being an "accountant" in the traditional sense, not having an accounting practice, etc.

I would love to hear from anyone who has taken a path similar to what I am proposing, as well as anyone who has some general advice on the viability of such a venture - thank you very much!

Sherry H.

The solution

If you majored in accounting in college, that says a lot. If you've owned your own business, then you've learned the details (payroll, sales taxes, etc.). So, I think you could do quite well with a QuickBooks consutling business.

I'd recommend you join the ProAdvisor Program and become a Certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor. Here's a quick video about why it would help you:

Also, it helps in your rankings in the Find a ProAdvisor referral website when you're certified in more years. You can still earn the QB 2008 certification through the end of July. 2008 & 2009 are very similar so you could knock them both out--one right after the other.

Also, with your knowledge in ecommerce and retail, you may choose to specialize in that area. Lots of people need help integrating their ecommerce w/QB.

PLEASE mark this answer as solved (click the button under the answer) or post additional questions. Thanks so much!!!
