Sorting Vendor Balance Detail Reports

Is it possible to sort a vendor balance detail report by something other than vendor name - possibly by vendor type. I want to keep the subtotal information by vendor, but sort it by another field. It seems that when I change the "Sort by" function in the Modify report area, it just resorts the detail transactions for the vendor. How do I sort vendors by another field?
