Issues with Online Banking in QB Pro 2009

I just purchased Quickbooks Pro 2009 last week, because I liked the promises of improved online banking. How can you call this improved? The online banking interface is HORRIBLE—it takes me a LOT longer to download and enter my transactions now than it did with 2008. I would go back to 2008 if I could, but I don’t want to have to re-enter my data!

I’ve been a dedicated QB user since 1998, and this is by far the worst “upgrade” I’ve ever seen. It seems like QB released 2009 without ever really testing it with real people.

Here are just a few of the online banking annoyances I’ve noted:

First, it closes all my windows going into the Online Banking dialogue.

Then, there are all the yes/no confirmation popups when I start up, and close it down. EVERY TIME. Very annoying.

Actually matching the transactions/entering them is a huge pain—the interface elements are terrible, especially the fact that they don’t auto-fill/auto select like elements do in the rest of Quickbooks.

If I need to create a new payee, I have to completely exit out of the whole online banking interface to add them—what a terribly inefficient setup!

Can’t paste into “memo” field when entering splits on online expenses

Screen flashes/reloads a bunch each time you save a new entry

Account name doesn’t auto-fill—arggg!!!

Can’t see register/edit transaction after entering it unless I close everything

First time I click “Billable” checkbox it unchecks when entering a split

When I downloaded a statement for one of my credit cards, it wouldn’t associate it with the account. It gave me the choice of associating a new account with this download (which of course I can’t do) and the existing accounts window only showed “Add New.” I had to edit my existing account and de-activate the online services for it before it would let me associate it with the download.

When downloading info for a bank account, it said there were no new transactions (but of course there were.) I had to edit my existing bank account and de-activate the online services for it before it would let me associate it with the download and work correctly.

When I downloaded my current bank account transactions, all of the transactions that were already in the register were of course skipped by the online banking tool—but they weren’t marked with the little lightning bolt as being matched.

Intuit, please tell me you're going to improve this horrible interface soon and I don't have to wait another year and spend another couple hundred bucks to get it?

I am in total agreement with you...I do not understand how this is an improvement. Does Intuit read these forums? I wasn't sure if they are just viewed by community members only or if Intuit reads them as well. If not, you should forward your post to someone there...you captured the main issues so clearly.

Thanks so much for detailing exactly what many of us are going thru! To top it off I just learned from 2 of my clients that BOA is not supporting 2009. One client is new to QuickBooks so of course they purchased 2009 - what a nightmare.

I am so frustrated with the way Intuit BUTCHERED the Online Banking!!! How did this version get thru an approval?!? The OB was working just fine in the previous version. It needed a bit of an improvement but not an overhaul that sets us back 10 years. I'd love to have one of the creators of the new OB come here and manually enter hundreds of downloaded transactions and manually retype every information. I am BEYOND DISSATISFACTION. I cannot believe that Intuit is playing with their reputation by letting the new OB into circulation. The old saying "measure twice and cut once" is applicable here 100%. PLEASE DO SOMETHING WITH IT!!!!

I certainly would like to know. I have used QB for years and Online banking as well. The OB part of my day used to take me (QB 2006) a couple of minutes to process and now is miserable with the delays and terrible interface. The screen takes forever to load and when loaded in the background slows down everything else I do in QB until I close it. The add transactions screen vendor dropdown has changed and is much more cumbersome. Clicking on an account to access it to match prompts me ever time to which I have to click OK. Yes I want to do this, that's why I clicked on the account so why does a window appear asking me if I'm sure? (maybe they got a developer from the Windows UAC team). Also my Bank of America downloads only work intermittently now. I hate the "Please try again in 15 minutes" message. It worked fast and reliably in QB 2006. NICE UPGRADE!!!!!

Agreed - fortunately it is not too late for me to switch back - to QB 2006 ! Any business with any kind of moderate to high volume needs the "add multiple" function. An incredible blunder on the part of Intuit. There are 40 franchisees in my market and I'm going to send all of them an email advising them not to upgrade!

At least you can get to the point where you can create a new payee. As soon as I bring up QB 2009 online banking and try get my transactions I get a bunch of error pop ups and then as I try to put my transactions in the register I get the same error messages. It is really annoying ! After all of the error pop up messages I check to see if the transaction made it into the register and guess what it didn't. I called QB support and they don't have a clue, I asked them why put out software and not thoroughly test it! So I uninstalled 2009 and went back to 2008!

To: Community_Nic - this thread isn't listed separately as a forum, which means users and accountants who come to the online banking forum won't find all the posts -- this separation doesn't make sense - you'll have many complaints in one place, and other complaints along with responses from Intuit in another place -- or maybe you are trying to make sure there isn't an enormous number of complaints in one place which would make users believe that their anger at these horrible changes is shared by all other users .

I am adding my vote to scraping the new On-Line banking and rolling back as quickly a possible. I've un-installed 2009 and returned it until this issue is resolved. Shame as there are some other nice features.

My big fear is that this was the "first" module in an Updated Quickbooks interface. If this was deemed acceptable to release, Intuit has really missed read their user base.

Eschlange, well said. I have had every problem that you have mentioned and another. The shutting down all other screens, no autofill or add payee....what was Intuit thinking? Shiny is better? 2009 seems to be the most forced "upgrade" I have ever seen from Inuit. What a joke! Guess whose sales are about to plummet.... If this isn't fixed soon it may even effect Intuit in the coming years.

I too am about to jump ship from Quickbooks 2009. The online banking feature has added incredible innefficiency. The loss of add multiple capabilities is a horrible misstep for the 2009 "upgrade." I have one other gripe to add. I am a bar owner. One quality of the industry I am in is that you have lots of employees that don't manage money well. Sometimes they need to not cash a check because as soon as it hits their account they spend it. Because of this I'll have employees cash paychecks that are sometimes six months old. In the 2008 version these transactions would not automatically match because they were too old. At least I was able to scroll through my check register to manually match them in the match transactions screen. Now I have to delete the downloaded transaction. Then I go back into my register to scroll through and clear it. I am not about to start printing check void after 30 or 60 days on my checks if this is how my employees feel most comfortable saving money. Quickbooks took a big crap on this one.

I agree 300% I found this thread after just posting the following:

As hard as I have tried I cannot believe that the new “improved” Online Banking works this way.

I have been in the tech industry for over 22 years and seen plenty of poorly designed interfaces and products but none as frustrating as this.

The interface and controls on the screens aren’t even consistent with the rest of the QB interface.

If anyone in testing and quality control ever used the old interface and switched to this one there is no way it would have passed any type of data entry or data flow management QC.

Magically they have actually managed to make downloading transactions from your bank or credit card processor worse and more time consuming than manual entry.

You have got to be kidding me!!!!!!!!!!!

• You have to leave the interface to add a payee

• The drop downs are much more inefficient then the standard QB drop downs for data entry. I can’t precisely explain except to say use it ONCE and you’ll know exactly what I mean

• The drop downs don’t hit subaccounts!!!!! If I type “Lodg” for a Lodging subaccount of Travel / Entertainment it matches NOTHING. I have to type in “Trav” and manually scroll and select “Lodging”.

• It updates “Branding Files” every time I attempt to go online prior to even asking me for my password which is a significant waste of time

• The “Online Banking Center” as a whole loads slowly and functions sluggishly once loaded

• If you have to assign the expense to a customer you have to access the “splits” area which forces you to manually enter the transaction amount even though the “split” is the same amount as the transaction total. I don’t need to “split” the transaction but do need to assign it to a client and put a memo on it

• I could continue but am just getting angrier as I type. Simply browse this forum or others online and this list grow significantly.

I keep finding myself staring blankly at my computer monitor in disbelief.

Intuit, please tell us this was a huge mistake and you are going to address it ASAP. Please keep your transaction interface entry and management consistent in all modules. Please don’t make me go back to an old version or worse make me change vendors.

Please read what we say and let us know that you care.

I'm glad to see Intuit is officially responding to this issue. Hopefully they can get the major issues fixed quickly, win back loyal users, and not make the same mistake again.

This situation reminds me of a book I recently read--anyone read "Groundswell?"

I'm going to email Greg and let him know I'm rootin' for him.

Hi,

It's Greg again, and I will keep posting here as I have more updates. As I mentioned above, I have been reading every post and review that has come out on QuickBooks 2009. We hear your concerns about the new Online Banking features and I know many of you are frustrated that it takes longer to get your work done. We are working hard to fix these problems and to make it as easy to use as before.

In fact, we would love your help and suggestions. You can get my email address by clicking on my username (Greg) and going to my profile.

These are the concerns I have heard most about the new online banking feature:

1. Can’t quickly review recognized transactions before adding them all to QuickBooks (the way you used to with “add multiple”)

2. Typing in the drop down fields doesn’t automatically fill in the name

3. Can’t add new names or accounts in online banking

4. Can’t see register to manually match a transaction

5. Bank of America doesn’t work with the new QB online banking (BofA is working to fix this issue, I will let you know when I get more details)

We know there are other concerns to consider as well. Please keep checking back to this forum for more details. I will keep you in the loop on what we are doing and when you can see the updates. I will have more specific information soon.

Thank you for your patience while we work on this.

Greg

As for me, the On Line Banking in QB 2008 worked just fine. I do like the ability to cancel a check that is sent to the bank for payment. This new feature is nice

In response to Greg's summary of the problems identified in the bank download,

1) this solution MUST include an automated "add multiple" type of feature that at minimum is not worse that QB 2006/2007

let me suggest that a successful solution would also include:

1) ability to add a class to the download, in addition to the account

2) the ability to match to transactions that are old (I run a clothing business with a lot of teenagers, and we have the same issue with some paychecks not getting cashed for up to 6 months)

3) the ability to recognize payees that are effectively the same but subtly different (e.g. Walmart and Sam's Club use some different numbers on each transaction and have to be routinely re=entered)

I look forward to a fix soon.

Thank you Greg for providing some response on this issue.

I've called ProAdvisor support a few times to see if there was some way to find out what, if anything, was being done or at least considered for changes to 2009 online banking and have gotten nowhere. Two times, they basically just said that they didn't know anything and the third one said they would send me some information they were able to find. It turned out to be a white paper regarding release 2, which was useless.

I have some clients who want to upgrade, and need to badly, but I'm holding them off until there is some resolution to this problem.

Thank you Greg! I agree with all the comments on this posting, especially add-multiple. I returned my QB 2009 and rolled back to 2006 until there is a fix.

I'd like to see online banking similar to the way it used to be with one exception that it should be able to recognize similar names better. The concept of matching "rules" in the 2009 interface seemed like a good idea, but it never worked for me. for whatever reason, it just never recognized a single payee. Maybe because all of mine were "other names" and not vendors. So, basically keep it similar to the way it was, but enhance it just a little and I think there would be a lot of happy customers out there.

I would also like to be able to open multiple windows at a time. I don't believe there is any need to close all windows down and open just the online banking window. the way it worked before was great because sometimes I had to go back into something else to research a transaction...

And, please keep the window sizes to a minimum. There is no need for huge fonts and arrows pointing in different directions. Once someone figures out how to use the features, the added fluff just takes up valuable screen space. Not to mention that the window contents usually didn't fit in the alotted screen space. I had to use the scrollbars to click the "add to quickbooks" button.

Oh, and please just use the same controls that are used in the rest of the application. When selecting an account or a payee, I think we are all familiar with how the register's drop down works. we can start typing and it filters our list and that works great. seems like it would be an easy fix just to use those existing drop-down controls. no need to create anything new here...
