Getting your name out there

Any secrets to getting those first few clients? I am a Certified ProAdvisor and am listed on the referal database, but haven't had any hits yet. I am about to send letters introducing myself and my services to local small business. Good idea? I don't want to spend money advertising quite yet, b/c I know there are some other ways to go about getting my name out first. Your suggestions would be much appreciated.

My employer & I have had CPAs in our area refer clients to us. They understand that we are there to help make their job easier by providing them clean data. These clients generally see their CPA only when they need business and tax advise. By referring the client to us, they know the numbers are accurate and reliable, therefore, it makes their job a lot easier.

I would become involved in organizations such as the chamber of commerce in your town. This is a great way to connect with other businesses and CPAs that could use your service. Once you have been able to complete an engagement sucessfully, word of mouth will begin to circulate. Word of mouth is the best form of advertising (as well as the cheapest).

Hope this gives you a starting point.

I would echo what Tammy said - get involved in your local Chamber of Commerce to meet small business owners in your area.  Another great networking organization is Business Network International - find a chapter in your area by going to www.bni.com.  I believe BNI is the most effective word-of-mouth marketing organization around.
