I am starting a bookkeeping business soon. I am just waiting now for my business name filing to be approved. I recently joined NACPB. My question is - Will it be beneficial to me to get a CPB license? I have a degree in accounting and I am working on QB certification now.

I'm glad to hear you're working on the QB certification!  Once you become a Certified QB ProAdvisor, then you can use the logo on your business cards, website, etc.  You'll also be listed in the Find-a-ProAdvisor referral database (make sure you complete your profile and include a link to your website).  The Certified QB ProAdvisor logo helps with obtaining clients because of the name recognition of QB.  Plus, you'll have access to a lot of training, tech support, etc.  As for the CPB, you should consider whether you think it will help you improve your knowledge base, provide you with other benefits, obtain clients, etc. and is a reasonable cost.  Good luck--having your own business is great!  (A little scary and a lot of hard work, but soooooo worth it!).

Hi Becky Jane,

Let me put it to you this way. Let's say you were a small business owner using QB and you knew you had to rely on an outsourced professional to help you keep your books. Let?s say you had a choice of engaging a Certified QB ProAdvisor or a Certified QB ProAdvisor who also is a Certified Public Bookkeeper (CPB) and a member of NACPB. With all other variables being equal, who would you hire?

I also have recently decided to start my own bookkeeping business and started with Quick Pro Advisor Certification which I passed yesterday and today I joined NACPB I would like to add the CPB designation to my name but money is tight so there is two options one is the self study guide and exam for $199 and the second is to just take the exam for $50 I was wondering how helpful the study guide is and is it worth another $149?

When you joined NACPB - did you not receive the CD with the 10 free guides with your membership?

The three guides you need to study from to obtain your certification should be included on the CD. Also double check your CD - I noticed on my CD there were only 9 guidebooks - (one was included twice) I contacted David at NACPB and he sent the missing guidebook immediately.

You should only have to pay the additional $50 for the exam.

Good luck!!

Andrea,

I received a NACPB email a week or so ago stating that NACPB was discontinuing the free best selling bookkeeping and accounting guidebooks promotion last Friday. I also just looked on the NACPB website and I don't see the 10 Free Guidebooks promotion banner on the site. So, I don't think they offer the guidebooks anymore.

Cathy you're right they have just discontinued - but I spoke with Lindsey at NACPB if she can call NACPB today or tomorrow they may be able to work something out since she missed the deadline by days!

Good Luck

Andrea,

You're probably correct, they're pretty good about things like that.
