Setting up an accounting business

Hi All,

I'm an accountant who qualified in the UK (ACCA). I moved to the US 6 months ago. I have no plan to do the CPA exams but currently studying towards my CFP.

I'm in the process of setting up my own business offering accounting services to small business. I have over 10 years accounting and finance experience (small business and large corps). Planning to offer the following services:

- Biz plan review

- Preparing financial business plan

- QB Consulting - installation, set up, training, check up, etc

- QB Financial write up

- Controller type services ( business performance review etc)

I am not looking to offer bookkeeping services.

I have used various accounting systems but not QB.

I have downloaded the 60 day trial version (premier Accountant). I have worked through all of the on line tutorials and now going through the 548 page downloaded guide book. I'm finding that it's actually quite an easy program to learn and use. I am working my through all of the examples. After that I will set up a friend's business on QB. I am also planning to enrol on the Pro advisor program and take the certification exam. I have also bought Michelle Long's book on QB Consulting and read it twice. I am looking to take the certification before I start marketing my business.

My business plan is almost completed now. The purpose of my message here is to get your general opinions and feedback. My main concerns are the impact of not offering bookkeeping services, being non CPA and using QB. For QB, will the process above that I'm going through with QB combined with the Pro Advisor certification really prepare me to be a competent QB consultant? Also, will i get enough client for write up services if I'm only focusiing on QB?

Any feedback appreciated.

Thanks!

Becomming a ProAdvisor was definitely a good step. There are a ton of free training courses on intuit's accountant website (http://accountant.inuit.com/tr... that can help. 2 in particular may help you in your search for new business. There's a Train the Trainer course and an Effective Marketing Course. Among several others to help you stay aprised of intuit products. Hope this helps!

Thanks!

Since I posted my message, I have completed the course and now a Certified QUickBooks Pro advisor. After more research, I have made some amendments to the services I will offering - I am now offering bookkeeping. I have found the various resources on the Pro Advisor website invaluable.

Thanks!
